Descenders are friction devices used to rappel or to lower loads. All descenders use friction in one way or another to control the rate of descent for a rappeller or to lower equipment or people. There are three different types of descenders: the figure eight family, racks, and bobbins.
The figure eight family is the most popular style of descender and is widely used in rescue, sport and police operations. They are very strong, and simple to use but it is difficult to vary friction once a load is applied. Figure eight descenders are an excellent choice when the drop is short. If the drop is long, the rope weight below the rappeller can make it difficult for the rappeller to move down the rope without feeding the rope through the device. The figure eight family lends itself to bottom belays. In a bottom belay, the belayer at the bottom of the drop applies tension (or weight) to the rappel line. This tension will either stop the rappeller or if less tension is applied it will slow the rate of descent. The figure eight family consists of fixed friction devices in that the amount of friction in the device cannot be changed once a load is applied. A single wrap is sufficient for the weight of one person. For two person loads use a double wrap. Due to the twist and turns in figure eight descenders they will tend to put twists and kinks in the rope. Deaf figure eights do not have ears, and are preferred by rock climbers and sports people where light weight and small size are important. Figure eights with ears have two ears or wings which are intended to prevent the rope from slipping up to the top and forming a girth hitch, which can strand the rappeller until he removes his weight from the device. Consult the following table for specifications on figure eight descenders.
Racks have been used for rappels in excess of 3,000 feet (915m). A rack may be bulkier and heavier than some other devices but, its variable friction and ease of operation more than justifies its use. Friction can be varied by the spacing of the brake bars and by the number of brake bars used, both of which can be changed under load. A rack can be attached or removed from the rappel line without removing it from your harness or the anchor if used as a lowering device. They do not twist the rope making for a smoother rappel. Racks will accept almost any size or type of rope and will accept two ropes in most sizes. This feature is very desirable when lowering a stretcher as one line can go to the head end and the other to the foot end. When rigged in this manner it is possible to go from a horizontal lower to a vertical lower and back again by locking off one rope while lowering the other. A rack can quickly be locked off freeing both hands to rig vertical gear or care for the patient. Brake bars are made of aluminum, or stainless steel. Aluminum bars give a greater amount of friction. Steel bars have less friction but they do not wear out as quickly as aluminum bars. Angled slot brake bars stay in place once they are snapped into position, while straight slot bars are held in place by the rope, so they help to prevent rigging in the rope backwards. We recommend that the second bar only be a straight slot bar for the maximum degree of safety. The large aluminum top bar helps to give more friction and it is a better heat sink than a standard .75” bar; however, do not use more than one top bar in a rack as the friction will be too great. Bars with training grooves keep the rope centered on the bar. We do not recommend training grooves on racks that will use two ropes.
Bobbins, such as the Petzl Stop, reflect a European approach to rappelling. The rope is threaded through the descender in a large graceful S-bend which does not twist or kink the rope. They can be clipped into the rope without unclipping them from your harness.
If you would like more information on rappelling and lowering techniques we suggest consulting the following books, all of which can be found in the Publications section of this catalog: ON ROPE, RAPPELLING, VERTICAL CAVING, SINGLE ROPE TECHNIQUES, WILDERNESS SEARCH AND RESCUE.

Rescue Escape Artist
The most advanced escape descent control device available. UL Classified to NFPA-1983. The Escape Artist offers what most other escape devices do not- a hands-free edge transition and a controllable descent. The Escape Artist pays out the rope smoothly and then locks when loaded, allowing both hands to be used to negotiate the exit. Squeezing the lever gives the user control of the descent rate. Intended for the most extreme conditions, the Escape Artist’s all metal construction and minimum number of parts provides durability and reliable performance. The Escape Artist is intended to be pre-rigged on the escape line, ready for immediate use. Variable friction allows user to control rate of descent. Works equally well with or without gloves of any type. Constructed of aluminum and stainless steel. For rope sizes 7.5 to 9.5 mm. Weighs 5 oz.
Available in red (300863) and black (300865).
CMC Rescue MPD™ Pulley * Rescue Belay * Descender
· Variable-friction descent control device for
rescue systems and rappels
· High efficency pulley with an integral rope-locking
mechanism (ratchet) for a haul system
· Rescue belay device
Developed during four years of research & testing, the MPD is the next
major advance in technical hardware for professional rope rescuers - a

Figure Eight Descenders
CMI Rescue 8, Ultra 8 and 8 Ring |
The Ultra 8 is designed to be used with 8-11mm(5/16”-7/16”) Kernmantle ropes in either single or dual configurations. While the diminutive size of the Ultra 8 means that the rate of descent is somewhat slower than with a standard figure 8, it also means better control. The small teardrop tie-in hole mandates the use of a single locking carabiner. Material: 7075-T6 aluminum forging. Dimensions: 4” x 2.4”(10 x 6.1cm). The Standard 8 Ring can be used with kernmantle and laid 9mm, 10.5mm, or 11mm ropes in either single or double configurations. Single locking or double oval carabiners may be used equally well for strength and safety. Material: 6061-T6 aluminum forging. Dimensions: 5.5” x 3”(14 x 7.7cm). The Rescue 8 offers important additional benefits specifically designed for rescue applications. Extended ears on the upper portion of the large ring prevent the rope from sliding up and locking off. The large upper oval allows free passage of single knotted 1/2”(12.5mm) ropes, and doubled 5/8”(16mm) ropes. The dual tie-in holes allow the Rescue 8 to remain attached to the harness while the rope is fed through it and the attaching carabiner. Material: 6061-T6 aluminum forging. Dimensions: 6.6” x 6”(17 x 15.5cm).

Figure 8 w/ Ears (Catalog #NFPA128701)
The Russ Anderson/SMC Figure 8 with ears is one of the most popular full-sized descenders used by professionals throughout the rescue, fire service and police/tactical markets. Machined from ½” thick, solid aluminum, heat-treated bar and then finished with a very tough, hard-anodized finish in either grey or black. This is the smaller of two sizes and is ideal for working with a single or a double wrap of up to ½” diameter rope. Adding “ears” to this design helps to eliminate the potential for ropes slipping up into a girth hitch and also make it easier to “tie off” when on rappel. The carabiner hole doubles as a belay plate for up to ½” rope. The center hole allows you to rig the 8 without unclipping it from your harness.
Descent
Control 8 (#113000)
Exceptional control of starting acceleration, rappelling speed, deceleration for stopping, light weight, tough, and stainless steel wear-resistant surfaces are the main features of this unique descender. This descender performs well in repetitive rappelling environments, such as rescue training or at climbing gyms. Designed for use on rope 1/2'' and smaller, the wider ''shoulders'' help to prevent formation of a girth hitch when the rappeller's weight is off the rope. When descending, the un-weighted end of the rope does not rub against the loop of rope passing around the neck of this descender, due to its unique shape. As with all SMC products, welding is done by aircraft certified welders, followed by dye penetrant inspection to insure full compliance with our stringent Quality Assurance Standards. Weighs 7.5 oz, dimensions 5” x 3.7” x 0.375”. Strength >20,000 lbf – 88.9kN.

Sidewinders
A descender which is made of stainless steel and is
virtually indestructible, giving it the tremendous advantage of durability over
aluminum. Its chief advantage is the ability to lock off. It is easier and
simpler than previously possible. The Hall Sidewinder comes in three sizes for
various diameters of rope. The Large Sidewinder is best when used with ropes
with diameters of 5/8”(16mm) or less. The Medium is best when used with ropes
less than 1/2”(12.5mm). The Small is best when used with ropes less than
7/16”(11mm), such as for personal rescue. The Open Sidewinder comes in the same
three sizes as the Hall Sidewinder. The only difference between them is the
ability to attach the Open model directly to the D-ring of your harness without
using a carabiner. Weight: large- 16oz.(457g), small- 4.5oz.(129g), medium-

A rack should be clipped into the seat harness or anchor with a single locking D-carabiner (or two non locking gates turned opposite and opposed). The rack should be oriented so the short leg (the one with the nut) is down and out away from the body. The choice between a standard rack frame and a twisted rack frame is based upon the orientation of the harness’s anchor point. If the anchor point is up and down or vertical (for example: Padded Tech Rescue Seat, Petzl Gourou or Jump) use a standard rack as shown in Figure A. If the anchor point is right, left or horizontal (for example: Rappel Rescue Seat) use a twisted rack as shown in Figure B.

Suggested Rack Set Up
We suggest the following arrangement of Brake Bars for a one rope rappel rack. First, a top bar with training groove, second a .75”(1.9cm) bar with straight slot, the remaining bars being .75”(1.9cm) angled slot bars. For a two rope rescue rack substitute a top bar without training groove for the first bar. Use either aluminum or steel Brake Bars. Remember, the steel bars last longer but they offer less friction. Note steel racks use all steel bars.

Alpine Brake Tube
The Brake Tube is a friction
device used for single or double rope lowering systems. The tube’s main feature
is its ability to pass knots in a rope while the rope is loaded. It readily
dissipates heat caused by friction. This rescue lowering device was developed
by Mountain Rescue teams specifically to pass knotted ropes. Made of heavy
welded aluminum tubing and stainless steel, the Brake Tube is a useful
alternative to the brake bar rack for lowering heavy loads. Breaking strength
is rated at 10,000 lbs.(4536kg) when tested with a slow pull between the anchoring
ring and the crossbar tube. Acceptable rope diameters: 7/16”(11mm) or
1/2”(12.5mm). Weight 2.7 lbs.(1.2kg). Made is

Stop
Descender
Self locking bobbin descender which allows the user to
stop immediately with both hands free at any point along the rappel rope.
Greatly increases safety margins during a one person rappel. Avoid
uncontrolled descents whether due to a mistake by the rappeller or some other
cause such as a rock fall. A diagram showing how the rope is to be rigged
through the device is stamped on one side plate. It has an instant lock off
feature; the moment the stop lever is released the device automatically locks
off. Notice: heavier people may not come to a complete stop when the handle is
released. This is also true for lighter weight people once the device has been
used a number of times. If you experience a slow creeping motion after
releasing the handle try pulling out on the handle. This will usually stop all
motion. Do not use the stop lever handle as a way to control the rate of
descent, as this action increases the rate of wear on the descender and will
eventually make the stop function inoperable. Replacement parts are available
to correct worn stop bobbins. Maximum safe working load is 500 lbs.(227kg).

Fixed Brake Lowering
In a fixed brake lowering system the lowering rope which is attached to the load moves through an anchored friction device such as a rack or figure eight. The rate of descent and all other control is by the brake operator who will be located at the top of the drop at the friction device. The person/load being lowered has no control; you might say they are there for the ride. Obviously good clear communications between the person/load and the brake operator are critical to this type of operation. Figure eight rappel devices are suitable for single rope lowers that are “one man” loads [maximum of 300 lbs.(136kg)]. Racks are a better choice when the load is a “two man” load [up to 600 lbs.(272kg)]. A rack with a one inch top bar is ideal for fixed brake two rope lowers. In a two rope lower the ropes (both of equal diameter) are reeved through a rack which is anchored at the top of the drop. After exiting the rack one rope is attached to the foot end of a litter and the other rope is attached to the head end of the litter (using two different colored ropes helps to avoid confusion as to which rope is which). At any point during the lower the litter’s orientation can be changed simply by locking off one rope and lowering the other until the desired horizontal or vertical orientation is achieved, then lower with both ropes.
Traveling Brake Lowering
A traveling brake is nothing more than a fixed rope or ropes with the brake and load moving on it. In this system the rope does not move. The litter tender controls all functions of the lower. Basically this is the same as a rappel. Racks should be used for traveling brake lowers. The rack is attached to the litter bridle with one or more locking D carabiners through the welded eye on the rack frame. The rope(s) which are anchored at the top are reeved through all six bars of the rack and exit the bottom of the rack. The litter tender is tethered to the rack and must be positioned so that he can operate the rack, and attend to the patient’s needs. Control is by the litter tender, and is performed the same as in a rappel. Again good clear communications between the litter tender and the rest of the team is critical.
Belaying Lowering Systems
For the highest degree of safety all critical living loads must be belayed with a separate rope through a suitable belay which is secured to a separate anchor. If it is a one person load, the belay line must be attached to a suitable strong belay point on the harness. If it is a two person load (litter tender and patient), then the belay line must be connected to the harnesses on both the litter tender and the patient.
WARNING: Do not attempt any type of lowering with a
live load until you are thoroughly trained by a qualified instructor and are
familiar with lowering methods and safety techniques.
For
more information on lowering systems we suggest consulting the following books,
all of which are listed in the Publications Section of this catalog: ON ROPE,
WILDERNESS SEARCH AND RESCUE, MOUNTAIN SEARCH AND RESCUE TECHNIQUES.

Shunt
A self belay device for
rappelling. It works on single or double ropes from 5/16”(8mm) up to
1/2”(12.5mm). It can arrest an uncontrolled rappel or it can be used as a lock
off when both hands are needed. Easily slides up or down the rope(s) when the
body of the device is pulled, and locks off when weight is applied to the cam.
To release the locked off shunt, give the body a sharp downward tug after

The Kosmo MOUT Lifeline™ is designed to drag a wounded soldier from the line
of
It features a 30 ft. cord with a screw link on one end which is attached to a
loop on the soldier's vest behind the neck. There is a carabiner on the other
end that is clipped to a loop inside the pouch. The pouch has a belt loop that
is sewn to the pouch at the top and attached with velcro at the bottom. The
outside of the belt loop is covered with "loop" velcro for attachment
to "hook" velcro on a vest. There is "hook" velcro on the
front of the pouch in case the vest is equipped with "loop" velcro.

inches from the end. It keeps the cord in the bag when the screw link is attached
to the vest and the flap is closed. You can adjust the position of the ball to
fit your particular vest.
