Pulley diameter size should be a minimum of four times the rope’s diameter to maintain high rope strength. When a rope is reeved through a pulley sheave it creates a bend in the rope. Violating the 4:1 ratio may decrease the strength of the rope. We recommend sizing pulleys for the largest diameter rescue rope in your service or in neighboring teams’ service if you work mutual aid together. It is okay to oversize. It is never proper to undersize a pulley with respect to safety considerations. The same applies when selecting pulley width. Rescue pulleys are manufactured in 1/2”(12.5mm) and 5/8”(16mm) widths. It is okay to use a 1/2”(12.5mm) rope in a 5/8”(16mm) pulley, but not the other way around.

The cheeks (sideplates) of a rescue pulley must rotate on the axle allowing you to open the pulley and insert a rope into the pulley at any point along the rope. Pulleys with fixed cheeks must be threaded on from one end, a lot of fun when you have 150 feet of spaghetti at your feet. Pulleys are frequently used as directionals, and in this application it is not uncommon for the pulley to rub against a building or cliff, possibly abrading or damaging the rope if it is exposed. Cheeks that extend beyond the rope in the pulley will help to reduce the chance of this occurring. Axles should be made of steel, for high strength and good wearing characteristics. Axle bolt heads should have a low profile rounded shape to avoid snagging on ropes, rocks, shingles, etc.

Sealed bearing or needle bearing pulleys are sealed units, lubricated with greases rated for temperatures ranging from -30 to 250 Fahrenheit(-34 to 121C). They require no additional maintenance, and they run a little freer than do oilite bushings. They are ideal for dirty, gritty contaminated environments such as industrial sites, mines, power plants, and caves. Oilite bushing pulleys are less expensive than sealed ball bearing pulleys and they are a little stronger mechanically. Oilite bushings can become contaminated with mud, dirt or grit.

Single pulleys are commonly employed as directionals, in simple hauling systems, and in tyroleans (also known as telpher lines, high lines or slide for life). Double pulleys are used in more complex block and tackle arrangements.

It is important to remember that direction changes always act as a force multiplier, so be sure that the directional pulley is securely attached to an anchor which is strong enough for the anticipated load. For example if you hang a directional pulley from a tree limb directly overhead and run a rope up from your position through the pulley and back down to an object to be lifted, the pulley and anchor will see a load that is twice the weight your are lifting. This is true because the object will be pulling down with X pounds of force, while you are exerting an equal amount of force on the other rope. The end result is the pulley and anchor see twice the load. So be very careful with directionals.

2:1 Traveling Pulley

A-Simple 2:1

B-2:1 with Ratchet

C-2:1 Pulling Second Rope

This system is nothing more than a force multiplier turned around. One end of the line is attached to an anchor. The rope passes through a pulley and back in the direction of the anchor. The load is suspended from the pulley. The load is equally supported by both sides. When you pull up on the unanchored side you only need extend one half the force, but for twice the distance. Figure A portrays this in the simplest form. Note that this form is considered unsafe for live or critical loads.

Figure B is the preferred method for hauling a live or critical load. In this system we have added a ratchet cam. The ratchet cam is used to hold the load when sufficient force is not being exerted on the unanchored end.

Figure C shows how to use a 2:1 system to pull on a separate line. In this system we use an ascender (called the haul cam) to attach the traveling pulley to the load line. We place a second ascender (called the ratchet cam) below the haul cam. By placing the ratchet and haul cam on the load line the team can pull up the load line with the hauling system, set the weight on the ratchet cam, and then reset the haul cam to take another bite and haul up more of the load line. This same sequence is used with all other systems.

3:1 The Z-Rig

3:1 The Z-Rig

The z rig allows you to exert only one third the force for three times the distance. Notice that the z shape must be maintained otherwise it turns into a simple direction change and offers no mechanical advantages. As force is applied to the unanchored pulley it will move towards the anchored pulley until they meet. Set the ratchet cam by slightly slacking the hauling system behind the ratchet cam. Then reposition the haul cam by moving it towards the load. Repeat this procedure until the load reaches the desired level.

4:1 Piggyback Rig

4:1 Piggyback Rig

The piggyback is nothing more than a 2:1 system hauling another 2:1 system for a total mechanical advantage of 4:1. To set up a pig: divide the haul system line into two legs by tying a figure 8 on a bight at the mid point. Attach the knot to a suitable anchor. Use one leg to set up a 2:1 system with the haul cam attached to the load line. The free end of this 2:1 portion is terminated at the second pulley by attaching it to the carabiner hole on

the pulley. The other leg is used to set the second 2:1 system through the pulley with the terminated line. A ratchet cam is added to allow the team

to reset the hauling system.

Ratchet Cams

Ratchet Cams

A ratchet cam is used to hold the load while the haul cam is being repositioned. Do not consider the ratchet

cam to be a safety. Its sole purpose is to hold the load on a temporary basis. A ratchet cam may not hold

under shock or heavy loading. A potential problem is shock loading of the ratchet cam. This can occur as

the hauling team pulls the line through the system. An unanchored ratchet cam can move along with the

line, creating slack in the system (see Figures A & B). This slack can be the cause of a shock load to the

entire system. To prevent this from occurring a person, or shock cord can be used to prevent the cam from

moving as the line is hauled up as shown in Figure C.

Multi-Line Hauling System

Multi-Line Hauling System

This system is used to provide equal tension on two lines. Common uses are to pretension a dual line tyrolean traverse (highline) or to pull with equal force at several points on an object such as an overturned trailer that needs to be put back on its wheels. By adding additional anchored pulleys, traveling pulleys and ascenders this system can be adapted to pull on 3, 4 or more lines as needed.

Ascenders In Hauling Systems

Notice that the illustrations in this catalog show a number of different ascenders used as ratchet or haul cams. Mechanical ascenders or ascender hitches can be used to achieve the same end results. However, one must be aware that no system is 100% fail safe. Mechanical ascenders (Gibbs, Jumars, Petzls etc.) can cut the rope under high or shock loading. Ascender hitches have also been known to slip until the load comes to rest on a solid surface under the same conditions. There are no magic formulas one can give you that can tell you which type of ascender to use for any particular job. Do consider the manufacturers load ratings and recommendations when selecting mechanical ascenders. Temper this with training and practice before utilizing these techniques in the field.

See the Ascender section on page 2 for rope grab devices.

See Tripod/Confined Space Rescue section on page 135 for mechanical advantage systems.

CMC Rescue MPD Pulley/ Rescue Belay/ Descender

·  Variable-friction descent control device for rescue systems and rappels

·  High efficiency pulley with an integral rope-locking mechanism (ratchet) for a haul system

·  Rescue belay device
Developed during four years of research & testing, the MPD is the next major advance in technical hardware for professional rope rescuers - a multi-purpose device that performs all functions for main lines, belay/safety lines, tag lines and hoisting lines. The MPD can be used to tension high lines and guiding lines. Training and on-scene rigging can be greatly simplified by having a single device. Rescue system changeover from a lowering system to a raising system becomes faster and safer by eliminating the need to switch out and replace hardware.

·  Certified to NFPA 1983 - General Use

·  Meets BCCTR Rescue Belay Competency Criteria

·  Release knob has "anti-panic" locking

·  Becket allows rigging cleaner and more efficient pulley systems

·  Allows the main line and belay line rigging to be mirror images

·  Functions as lowering brake and as ratcheting pulley for raising

·  Rapid conversion to a retrieval line makes the MPD ideal for confined space operations

CMC ProSeries Digital Pulley

UL Classified to NFPA 1983-General Use. Knowing just how much rope you have out can be a significant help in planning an evacuation. What if you are using a capstan winch for pulling the rope and would like to keep a constant speed? The CMC ProSeries Digital Pulley can eliminate the usual, very rough estimate of the distance to the patient. While not every rescuer needs the system data provided by the Digital Pulley, it can be integrated to make the system safer and more efficient. The pulley has an integral swivel, keeping the digital displays visible. The pulley measures distance in feet or meters and the speed in ft./sec or m/sec. The large displays are easy to read and the distance display remains on until reset. The on/off button is recessed. Battery life: 1-2 years. The CMC ProSeries Swivel Pulley has the same hardware features as the Digital, but without the electronics. Includes:

  • Sealed ball bearing for maximum efficiency
  • Long-life lithium battery
  • Side plate rotates to open
  • Swivel aligns pulley with load

CMC Rescue S/S Swivel Pulley

UL Classified to NFPA 1983- General Use. This dual-purpose pulley is ideal as a change of direction on high anchor points or tripods. The stainless steel sheave can be used with steel cable or rope. By combining the pulley and swivel, the overall length of the hardware is minimized. The proprietary pivoting sideplate allows loading of the rope or cable while the pulley is still attached to the anchor. Sealed ball bearings for high performance.

CMC ProTech Pulleys

UL Classified to NFPA 1983 – Light Use. The choice for anyone that needs a super light, high strength pulley such as for mountain rescue, ski patrol, tower work, and swiftwater rescue. By machining the sideplates, the thickness of the metal can be varied to maximize the “strength to weight” ratio, a process that cannot be done with the traditional bent metal sideplates. The unique axle assembly allows a smooth sideplate that will not catch on the surface or other hardware. The aluminum sheave is mounted on sealed ball bearings.

Knot Passing Pulley

SMC Knot Passing Pulley

The Knot Passing Pulley has been re-designed based upon recommendations from the field. The sheave has been lowered to give more volume to accommodate larger knots and to increase stability when the pulley is being used as an edge roller. The carabiner hole has been enlarged to accept eight 1/2”(12.5mm) diameter carabiners. The sideplates are made from heat treated aluminum and pins have been added to lock off the sheave so a high strength tie off can be made if desired. This pulley uses rotating sideplates, and has oilite bushings that allow higher working loads on sheaves. This pulley offers the necessary size, strength and versatility to perform in a wide variety of rescue operations. Overall size is 10.6” x 6”(27 x 15cm) wide by 3.7”(9.5cm) thick. Weight 3.3 lbs.(1.5kg).

· Breaking strength 11,000 lbs.(4990kg).

Double Rope Rescuemate

Double Rope Rescuemate

This ingenious device combines a 2.5”(60mm) double sheave pulley with an ascender cam. It is this cam that acts as the fall arrest mechanism holding the load between hauling operations. If a conventional pulley is required the cam can be disengaged allowing the rope to flow freely, this operation can be done quickly and is easy to reverse. Unlike sealed units, the Rescuemate can be maintained or re-rigged in the field and it has no hidden internal mechanisms to malfunction. The pivoting side plates on the pulley allows the user to put it on the rope at any point. It is designed to lift or lower, life or load. With the addition of extra pulleys you can increase the mechanical advantage on the Rescuemate as required. It will accommodate ropes from 5/16” to 5/8”(8 to 16mm) in diameter. Maximum load at cam on a 1:1- 1985 lbs.(900kg). Safe working load at cam on a 1:1- 440 lbs.(200kg). Weight 28oz.(795g).
